Following the directive of Governor Aminu Masari, while receiving the committee report on the Katsina Central Market Inferno, the State Government has announced that all categories of civil servants and political office holders are to contribute part of their salaries to support the victims.

Consequently, a 20% deduction will be made to serve as the contribution from the salaries of the Governor, his deputy, members of the executive council, and all other political appointees. Meanwhile, civil servants on grade levels 1 to 14, will contribute 3% of their salaries to the project.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ahmad El-Marzuq, said this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Masari. He said the deduction will be for one month only.

According to the Commissioner, the decision came after the Executive Council deliberated on the reports of the White Paper Committee, which reviewed the recommendations of the earlier report, submitted by the Administrative Committee, on the Katsina Central Market fire disaster.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Human Development, Muhammad Daura, explained that the Special Adviser on Labour and Productivity, Tanimu Saulawa, with the leadership of the labour unions, has discussed the issue before the State Executive Council arrived at the final decision.

From the Committee’s report, a total of about N900 million worth of goods and property were destroyed in the inferno.

At present, the State Government has received a total of about N150 million as support from individuals and corporate organizations, for the victims.
