AfDB: Description of Adesina as ‘flamboyant’ not intentional, says BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation says the description of the President of the African Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina, as ‘flamboyant’ was not intentional.

The BBC subsequently withdrew the description from its original report, describing the adjective as unnecessary.

The news outlet said this in a tweet on Friday after several protests from a large section of Nigerians on social media.

The tweet read in part, “We have removed the description of Dr Akinwumi Adesina as ‘flamboyant’ from this post. We recognise this – absolutely unintentionally – may have caused offence, and is irrelevant. We have also corrected Dr Adesina’s title. He is of course President of the African Development Bank, not chairman.”

In a report published on Thursday titled, ‘Flamboyant Nigerian banker Akinwumi Adesina has been re-elected chairman of the African Development Bank (AfDB) after weathering a political storm over allegations of corruption,’ the BBC chronicled how Adesina emerged victorious after a corruption probe.

But many Nigerians took issue with the “flamboyant” description and called on the BBC to edit story.

However, some others who saw nothing wrong with the report, explained that the word “flamboyant” was neither derogatory nor insulting but simply means a stylish, confident and showy individual.
