Super Falcons Survives Heartbreak, Quizzes Into World Cup Round of 16

Super Falcons of Nigeria have been confirmed ‘Qualified’ from the group stages of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France after Chile defeated Thailand 2-0 in their final group F at the Roazhon Park, Rennes.

The Super Falcons despite losing 1-0 to France in their final group game on Monday after a penalty goal from Wendie Renard, had to opportunity to make of out of the group stages for the first time since the 1999 FIFA Women World Cup in USA if four games could go their way.

Nigeria needed fourth-placed Jamaica in Group C to pull off a shock win over third-placed Australia. Sam Kerr however, scored four goals as Australia beat Jamaica 4-1 on Tuesday night at Grenoble, France and that, advanced the Matildas into the knockout rounds.

Wednesday night however, was glorious for the Super Falcons as they got the help they needed from Group D. Scotland and Argentina (who are third in the group with 1 point) needed to play a draw, any draw whatsoever and they did just that as Argentina came back from a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 and give Nigeria the extra lifetime they needed.

Thursday evening would go sour for the nine time African champions as Cameroon would pull off a stunning last minute strike to grab a 2-1 win over New Zealand and take the 3rd of 4 best losers spot. All the Super Falcons needed was a draw in the game or if either side wins, it shouldn’t have been more than a 1-0 win.

Ajara Nchout scored a top-drawer goal to keep her team’s knockout round hopes alive and then score a fabulous 95-minute goal to see Cameroon defeat New Zealand 2-1, leaving the Super Falcons fate to the final game of the group stages – Chile’s group F game against Thailand.

Nigeria needed Thailand, who have conceded 17 times, needed to win Chile who also lost their previous games to Sweden and USA. Another permutation was that if they lose to Chile, it should not be more than 2-0.

Chile would eventually won 2-0 and failed to scored a third even with a second half penalty. Nigeria would now play Germany in the last 16 of 2019 Women’s World Cup.
