Rivers Supplementary: INEC fixes April 13 for election in 467 polling units

Just After Governor Nyesom Wike emerged the winner of the Rivers State supplementary elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has made another announcement that has left many in shock.

INEC has announced the date for another supplementary election in some constituencies in River State to be Saturday, April 13, 2019.  This decision is similar to the one made for the Imo North Senatorial District election held on February 23 and March 9, 2019, in which a commission was set up to look into the conduct of the election

The INEC National Commissioner and chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye made the statement on Thursday.

According to him, the commission met and reviewed the conduct of the just-concluded Rivers State collation exercise on Thursday, 4th of April, 2019.  The commission expressed satisfaction with the outcome and commended the security agencies for their professionalism which ensured the peaceful conduct of the exercise.

He said that political parties, domestic and international observers, other stakeholders and the people of Rivers State were commended for their efforts for their support and understanding which made the electoral process fast and easy.

He continued saying that supplementary elections will be held in some constituencies. They are Gokana, Opobo/Nkoro, Ahoada West and Abua/Odual.

The commission also deliberated on the conduct of lmo North Senatorial District election held on February 23 and March 9, 2019 and took into consideration a number of issues arising from the election.

“A committee has been set up to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of allegations of misconduct in the election. It is also to advise the commission on whether its procedures were complied with by officials. The committee is to submit its report on Wednesday, April 10 2019.”
