Today, Nigeria celebrates eighteen (18) years of uninterrupted democracy. Congratulations Nigeria and every Nigerian on this milestone achievement!
What we celebrate today is however without a cost. Our 18-year old democracy is an outcome of the deliberate efforts and huge sacrifices made by Nigerians. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) under the stewardship of President Aruna Kadiri commends Nigerians home and abroad, our security personnel, comrades in the Labour Unions, activists (@ CSOs, NGOs) among others for tirelessly steering a democratic system of government despite daunting national challenges. We say “THANK YOU”.
This day in our national history reminds us of the remarkable turn around made by Nigerians through the ballot in 2015. This day also marks the 2 years anniversary of President Buhari led federal government. Though many Nigerians are yet to felt any impacts of his administration, but it has shown seriousness on some salient issues- security, fight against corruption, rehabilitation of displaced persons among others. We commend the government for the strides recorded and urge them to do more.
Democracy though not perfect but has given us the most inspiring opportunity to transform Nigeria into the nation we desire, NANS hereby reiterates its full commitment to the deepening and consolidation of democracy in Nigeria and beyond. We Stand With Democracy.
In furtherance of our commitment to deepening and consolidation of nation's democracy, NANS urge the National Assembly to speed up their legislative duties of granting autonomy to the Local Governments as the third tier of governance. Autonomy for local governments will give unfettered freedom for local government administrators thereby dragging dividends of democracy to Nigerians at the grass-roots.
Also, NANS seeks increment of workers salaries in line with the current economic realities. We believe it is now necessary and urgent to review upward the minimum wage considering the cost of living in the country and also in view of the fact that improving the welfare of civil servants is key to addressing the problem of corruption, as majority of those involved in corrupt practice do so as a result of poor remuneration.
To our fellow students, be rest assured of our commitment to the struggle for the greater good of every Nigerian student. NANS under President Kadiri will continue to pilot its affairs according to the dictate of the time, and at all time protect and advocate your interest as enshrined in NANS charter of demands.
We wish all Nigerians most especially Nigerian students HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY!
