Public service workers under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have commenced a three-day warning strike from October 2 to 4, 2026, over worsening economic hardship and demands for improved wages.

The decision was contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the council’s National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, following the Federal Government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 21.

Among their demands are a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had also called for the urgent establishment of a tripartite committee to commence negotiations, stressing that the process should begin early enough to avoid delays in implementing a new wage law.

In the circular, the council said, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It directed public servants across the federal, state and local governments to participate in the industrial action, stating, “all Public Servants in the services of Federal, State and Local Governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all.”

The strike comes amid rising fuel prices, transport fares, house rents and other living costs across the country.
