PDP Senatorial Candidate Highlights Youth Employment, Healthcare, Education, Economic Growth Ahead of 2027 Elections
IJEBU-ODE, OGUN STATE — October 15, 2026
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ogun East, Alhaji Abdul-Hameed Femi Omotayo, popularly known as OmoOwo, has challenged the people of the district to prioritise competence, accountability and measurable results when choosing their representatives in the 2027 general elections.
OmoOwo made the call during a media parley organised by the Media Directorate of the OmoOwo for Senate campaign at OmoOwo Hall, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday.
The engagement brought together journalists, party representatives and campaign stakeholders to discuss the development challenges confronting Ogun East and the legislative priorities that should shape the district's political future.
Speaking at the event, OmoOwo stressed that the time had come for the people to look beyond political promises and demand representatives with the capacity, experience and commitment to deliver meaningful development.
“In Ogun East, we talk potentials, we want results. So we need to send people that are competent to do the job,” he declared.
He noted that although the district possesses considerable human and economic potential, translating these advantages into improved living conditions requires purposeful leadership, effective representation and sustained engagement with relevant institutions.
The PDP candidate maintained that the quality of representation should be assessed by the issues lawmakers pursue, the policies they support and the tangible benefits their constituents derive from their interventions.
Youth Employment, Education, Healthcare Top Agenda
OmoOwo identified youth unemployment, access to quality healthcare, education and the creation of economic opportunities as critical areas requiring urgent attention in Ogun East.
Drawing from his experience in the oil and gas industry, he emphasised the importance of equipping young people with relevant skills that can improve their employability and enable them to participate meaningfully in the modern economy.
He underscored the need to bridge the gap between educational qualifications and industry requirements, noting that practical skills development and access to employment opportunities should form an important part of strategies to address youth unemployment.
According to him, effective representation should also support policies and initiatives that strengthen small businesses, improve the fortunes of local traders and create a more enabling environment for economic activities across the district.
He highlighted the importance of supporting local markets and small-scale enterprises, which provide livelihoods for many households and contribute to economic activities in Ijebu, Remo and Waterside.
On healthcare and education, discussions at the parley reflected the need for sustained attention to essential public services and legislative interventions capable of improving the welfare of residents.
Fuel Subsidy, Oil Exploration, Ijebu-Remo State Dominate Discussion
The media parley also featured discussions on several national and regional issues, including fuel subsidy removal, oil exploration, the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, party unity and the constitutional responsibilities of a senator.
These issues provided an opportunity for journalists and campaign stakeholders to examine how national economic policies and legislative decisions affect the everyday lives of residents in Ogun East.
The discussions on oil exploration also brought attention to the need to explore economic opportunities within the district and ensure that development initiatives translate into benefits for host communities and the wider population.
The proposed Ijebu-Remo State was another issue considered during the engagement, reflecting ongoing conversations about state creation, regional identity and the future administrative and economic interests of the area.
Participants also discussed the importance of unity within the PDP as the party prepares for the 2027 elections, alongside the need for candidates and elected officials to understand the limits and responsibilities of their respective offices.
OmoOwo Explains Role of Senatorial Representation
The engagement further examined the constitutional functions of a senator, particularly lawmaking, legislative oversight and constituency advocacy.
OmoOwo's campaign maintained that effective senatorial representation must go beyond electioneering promises to include active participation in the legislative process, scrutiny of government programmes and sustained advocacy for projects and policies that address the needs of constituents.
The discussions highlighted the importance of building constructive relationships with relevant government institutions and ensuring that the concerns of communities are properly communicated and pursued through appropriate legislative channels.
The candidate reiterated that representation should be people-centred, with the needs of residents informing legislative priorities and the performance of elected officials measured against the progress achieved.
Ogun PDP Reaffirms OmoOwo's Candidacy
Among the dignitaries present at the parley were Engr. Ayinde Awobadejo, who represented the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, PhD; Architect Kayode Adebayo; Mr Femi Davies; Hon. Wale Ogunbanjo; and Hon. Wale Adedayo, a former chairman of Ijebu East Local Government.
The Director-General of the OmoOwo for Senate campaign was also present at the event.
Speaking on behalf of the state PDP chairman, Awobadejo delivered Tella's message and reaffirmed the party's recognition of OmoOwo as its candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
The affirmation underscored the party's position on the candidacy as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.
The presence of party representatives and campaign stakeholders also provided an opportunity to discuss the campaign's priorities and the expectations of voters across the senatorial district.
Media Engagement as a Platform for Accountability
The parley provided journalists with an opportunity to question the candidate on his development priorities, understanding of legislative responsibilities and proposed approach to representing Ogun East at the National Assembly.
The engagement also reinforced the importance of media participation in the electoral process, particularly in providing voters with information about candidates, their policy priorities and their understanding of the challenges facing their constituencies.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify, the need for issue-based campaigns, public scrutiny and clear development commitments remains central to conversations about representation.
OmoOwo maintained that the people of Ijebu, Remo and Waterside deserve representation that prioritises their interests and pursues practical solutions to the challenges affecting their communities.
He stressed that the ultimate measure of political leadership should not be the volume of promises made during campaigns, but the progress achieved in addressing the needs and aspirations of the people.
The media parley forms part of the OmoOwo for Senate campaign's engagement with journalists and other stakeholders as the PDP candidate seeks to present his vision for Ogun East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
