ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE — The Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council JNC, Comrade Sanyaolu Oladipupo Ismail has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun, CON, for sustaining palliative support for public servants in the state, following the allocation of ₦987.185 million for the intervention between April and December 2026.
Sanyaolu described the continued provision of financial support for workers as a welcome development, particularly at a time when civil servants and other Nigerians are grappling with rising transportation costs, food prices and other economic pressures affecting household budgets.
He admonished the civil servants to reciprocate this state government's commitment and dedication to their duties.
He also praised the Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, for what he described as his commitment to the welfare and interests of civil servants in Ogun State.
The JNC chairman, however, appealed to the state government to expedite the implementation of the 2024/2025 promotion exercise, stressing the importance of career progression, staff motivation and improved productivity in the public service.
₦987.185 MILLION ALLOCATED OVER NINE MONTHS
The Ogun State Government has earmarked a total of ₦987.185 million for palliative support for public servants covering the nine-month period from April to December 2026.
The allocation comprises ₦330.630 million for the second quarter, covering April to June; ₦329.245 million for the third quarter, covering July to September; and ₦327.310 million for the fourth quarter, covering October to December.
The latest allocation of ₦327.310 million represents the government's continued provision for the programme in the final quarter of the year.
According to a statement disclosed by the Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, on Friday, the sustained intervention reflects the Abiodun administration's commitment to workers' welfare and its efforts to cushion the effects of prevailing economic challenges.
The initiative is intended to provide some relief to public servants facing increased living expenses, particularly transportation and other essential costs associated with their daily responsibilities.
For many workers, such interventions can help ease financial pressures and provide additional support as they meet their personal and family obligations.
SANYAOLU COMMENDS ABIODUN'S WORKERS' WELFARE INITIATIVE
Reacting to the development, Sanyaolu expressed appreciation to Governor Abiodun for maintaining the palliative programme, describing the allocation as a demonstration of the administration's recognition of the challenges confronting workers.
The JNC chairman noted that public servants remain essential to the effective implementation of government policies and the delivery of services to residents across the state.
He maintained that policies aimed at improving workers' welfare could contribute to greater morale, commitment and efficiency within the civil service.
Sanyaolu's commendation also highlighted the importance of sustaining government interventions that respond to the economic realities facing employees, especially those whose earnings are under pressure from the rising cost of living.
He encouraged the state government to continue prioritising the welfare of civil servants through measures that provide practical relief and strengthen the relationship between the government and its workforce.
PRAISES HEAD OF SERVICE, SAKA OLANREWAJU
The JNC chairman also commended the Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, for his commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Ogun State.
Sanyaolu acknowledged the importance of the Head of Service's role in coordinating public service administration and ensuring that workers' concerns receive appropriate attention.
He stressed that sustained engagement between government officials, labour unions and civil servants remained essential to addressing workplace challenges and promoting a productive public service.
The commendation comes as the state government continues its palliative support programme amid broader concerns about the purchasing power of workers and the rising costs of basic necessities.
According to the union chairman, continued attention to workers' needs would help strengthen confidence in the public service and encourage employees to remain committed to their official responsibilities.
JNC SEEKS EXPEDITED 2024/2025 PROMOTION EXERCISE
Despite welcoming the palliative allocation, Sanyaolu urged the Abiodun administration to expedite the 2024/2025 promotion exercise for eligible civil servants in the state.
He emphasised that while palliative support offers temporary relief from economic pressures, promotion remains an important aspect of career development and professional advancement within the public service.
Promotion exercises provide opportunities for eligible employees to advance to higher positions in line with applicable service rules, performance requirements and established administrative procedures.
The union chairman's appeal therefore underscores the need for timely completion of the process to enable qualified workers to progress in their careers.
Delayed promotions can create uncertainty among employees, particularly those who have met the relevant requirements and are awaiting the outcome of the exercise.
Sanyaolu urged the state government to give the matter the necessary attention and ensure that the process is concluded as promptly as possible, subject to the applicable procedures and requirements.
