ODogbolu, Ogun State — The Executive Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government, Hon. Dr. Babatunde Oyetola Diya, has paid a condolence visit to the Atiba community following the tragic death of a child in a flood incident in the community.
The Chairman, who visited the community on Tuesday, October 7, 2026, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the death as a painful tragedy that has affected not only the bereaved family but the entire Odogbolu Local Government.
Speaking during the visit, Diya sympathised with the bereaved family and residents of Atiba, stressing the need for collective efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“This is a tragedy that has touched every one of us, not just a loss to her family but to all of us in Odogbolu. She was young, full of promise, and her passing under such circumstances is truly heartbreaking,” he said.
As part of efforts to support the affected community and the bereaved family during the difficult period, the Chairman donated ₦1 million.
Diya said the gesture was aimed at demonstrating the local government’s solidarity with the family and residents of Atiba at a time of grief.
Beyond the immediate relief, the Chairman assured the community that he would seek the intervention of the Ogun State Government and other relevant stakeholders towards addressing the developmental and environmental challenges confronting Atiba.
He specifically said he would solicit the support of Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, as well as the Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, CON, popularly known as YAYI, for the development of the community and measures to tackle its environmental challenges.
House of Assembly Raises Alarm
Speaking on behalf of the Member Representing Odogbolu Constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Chairman Diya conveyed the lawmaker’s condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Atiba community.
He disclosed that immediately after receiving news of the incident, Adeleye raised the matter on the floor of the Ogun State House of Assembly and drew the attention of Dangote Cement, the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority and other relevant government agencies to the urgent need for intervention.
According to Diya, the intervention is necessary to prevent a recurrence of the incident and safeguard the lives and property of residents.
He assured the community that the government was concerned about the situation and that necessary steps would be pursued to address the challenges confronting the area.
The Chairman’s visit was also an opportunity for community leaders and residents to highlight some of the environmental and developmental concerns affecting Atiba, particularly those associated with flooding and the safety of residents.
Diya’s intervention, coming shortly after the tragic incident, was described as a demonstration of empathy and responsive leadership as the local government seeks broader intervention to address the underlying challenges.
Community Leaders Receive Chairman
The Chairman was accompanied by several political leaders, government officials, community stakeholders and traditional representatives.
Those on the delegation included Alhaji Nurudeen Adekoya, SSA on Special Duties; Akogun Muyiwa Idowu, APC Odogbolu Chairman; Alhaji Wasiu Alausa, former Vice-Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government; Olotu Tejumola Ogunsaanu, APC Ward 11 Chairman; Alhaji Ganiyu Ogudu (CHEMAX); Alfa Jelil Ewuyemi; Mr. Saka Hammed; Mrs. Tawakalitu Ogunsaanu; Mrs. Okebanjo; High Chief Ashafa Adenuga, Baale of Atiba; Chief Idowu Waheed (Ekeji Ilu); and members of the Baale-in-Council, including Alhaji Anofi Bakare, Mr. Idowu Olanipekun, Mr. Saibu and Mr. Nureni.
Also present were Alhaji Saulabiu Bashiru, Chief Imam of Atiba; Mr. Olasunkanmi Alaga; and Oloritun Olorunsogo, among others.
The delegation was received by community leaders, who expressed appreciation for the Chairman’s visit and financial support, while urging relevant authorities to take sustainable measures to address the environmental conditions responsible for the recurring risks in the community.
The condolence visit ended with renewed calls for stronger collaboration among the local government, state government, traditional institutions, community stakeholders and relevant agencies to protect residents and prevent future flood-related tragedies in Atiba and other vulnerable communities within Odogbolu Local Government.
