Guinea has announced it will not join the planned ECOWAS single currency, becoming the first member of the regional bloc to formally opt out of the eco project ahead of its proposed July 2027 launch.

The 12-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently signalled a phased introduction of the common currency, with only countries meeting key economic benchmarks—including inflation, debt levels and monetary stability—expected to participate initially.

Guinea said it would retain the Guinean franc, citing economic considerations.

Analysts say the decision reflects concerns that joining the monetary union before strengthening the country’s productive capacity could weaken its economy.

They also note that about 80 per cent of Guinea’s exports are destined for Asian markets, reducing the potential benefits of aligning its currency with neighbouring West African states.

ECOWAS is expected to meet again in December to address outstanding issues, including the structure of the proposed central bank, decision-making framework and which member states will adopt the eco in the first phase.
