The nationwide rollout of the Artificial Intelligence Teacher Capacity Development Programme will benefit about 11,700 teachers and follows the successful completion of a pilot phase in six Federal Unity Colleges representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The initiative is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Education Support Services Department in partnership with ICEDT Consult Limited.
Speaking during the signing of the Terms of Reference in Abuja, the Director of Education Support Services, Mr. Gabriel O. Amudipe, described the programme as a major investment in the future of education and the professional development of teachers.
According to him, the initiative will equip teachers with critical digital skills, improve lesson planning, strengthen classroom instruction and encourage the responsible application of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning.
Amudipe urged all stakeholders involved in the implementation of the programme to uphold the highest standards, stressing the need for effective monitoring and quality assurance to ensure its success nationwide.
“The programme is a strategic investment in teacher professionalism and the future of education,” he said, calling on stakeholders to ensure strict implementation standards throughout the rollout.
The ministry said the AI capacity-building programme is expected to significantly improve classroom practice and learning outcomes while equipping students with the digital knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in the 21st-century economy.
It added that the initiative underscores the Federal Government’s determination to modernise Nigeria’s education system through technology-driven reforms and strategic partnerships.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to delivering inclusive, globally competitive education in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the expansion of AI training marks another step towards preparing Nigerian schools for the future.
