Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has announced that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review will present its final report on the proposed creation of state police to the upper chamber before the end of the week.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Bamidele explained that the move is part of the National Assembly’s broader efforts to tackle Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Bamidele, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, said once the proposal is approved by the National Assembly, it will be forwarded to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for ratification.
“We came to the conclusion that we’re going to pass the constitutional amendment in respect to making provision for state police, and I can tell you as of today that, that will come to creation this very week because there’s no need to allow any further delay,” he stated.
He revealed that federal lawmakers have recently held several meetings with President Bola Tinubu, Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, and other stakeholders to finalize the framework for state policing.
The report is expected to set the stage for one of the most significant constitutional amendments in Nigeria’s security architecture.
