The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced new security measures aimed at strengthening policing across Nigeria, including the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) to the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the directive takes effect from June 15, 2026, and was unveiled during the monthly conference of senior officers at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Under the plan, DIGs will provide closer supervision and strategic leadership in their assigned zones, working with Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police to improve coordination and response to emerging threats.
To further combat cross-border crimes, the IGP introduced a new initiative tagged “Handshake Patrols”, requiring neighbouring state commands to conduct joint patrols, share intelligence, and coordinate operations against criminals who exploit state boundaries to evade arrest.
Disu emphasized that many offenders commit crimes in one state and escape into another, making stronger inter-state collaboration essential.
He charged Commissioners of Police to intensify patrols along major entry and exit routes and adopt a regional approach to security challenges.
The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, strategic coordination, and inter-agency collaboration to safeguard lives and property nationwide.
