A wave of shock and outrage has swept through the Okpoko community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State following the arrest of a couple accused of dumping the lifeless bodies of their twin infants in a drainage channel.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the biological parents after the bodies of the newborn twins were discovered abandoned along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi area of Okpoko on Sunday, June 21.
According to police authorities, operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters launched an immediate investigation after receiving distress reports from residents who spotted the infants' bodies inside a drainage channel in the early hours of the day.
Police officers swiftly moved to the scene, secured the area, and commenced preliminary investigations while gathering evidence that could help unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
The command disclosed that investigators were able to trace and apprehend the parents shortly after the discovery. The suspects are currently in police custody and are reportedly assisting detectives with information that may shed light on the deaths of the twins and the decision to abandon their bodies.
The disturbing incident has sparked widespread condemnation among residents, many of whom described the development as heartbreaking and unimaginable.
Reacting to the case, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the alleged act in strong terms, stressing that every child has a fundamental right to life, protection, care, and dignity.
The police commissioner assured members of the public that the command would conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to establish all the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
