Chief Ikeje Asogwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has emerged victorious in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Asogwa polled a total of 162,360 votes, decisively defeating his closest rival, Chief Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 9,299 votes.
Announcing the results on Sunday in Nsukka, the Returning Officer, Prof. Christian Ezeibe, declared Asogwa the winner, stating that he satisfied all legal requirements.
Other candidates performed as follows: Ossai Elias Okwudiri (NDC) — 3,129 votes
Chika Idoko Emmanuel (ADC) — 1,676 votes
Kingsley Aneke (Boot Party) — 1,607 votes
Ejike Simon Eze (LP) — 1,027 votes
Charles Ugochukwu (PRP) — 667 votes
A total of 184,094 voters were accredited out of 727,340 registered voters in the district.
The by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Okey Ezea of the Labour Party, who passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62.
In his acceptance speech, the senator-elect, Ikeje Asogwa, expressed gratitude to the people of the six local government areas in the Enugu North Senatorial Zone for their overwhelming support. He pledged to provide quality and effective representation.
This result marks a significant gain for the APC in the South East region.
