The development of Gateway Internlational Airport commenced in April 2021 as an integral component of Ogun State Strategic Multimodal Transportation Master Plan which was equally commissioned by His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun CON upon inception of this administration.
The state-of-the-arts transportation infrastructure which sits on 5000 hectares of land within the first ever Aerotropolis in Nigeria is designed to provide efficient, effective, accessible and affordable air transport services for local, regional and international passengers and cargo.
GIA is designed to the latest ICAO/IATA standards space with smart terminals for fast check-in and seamless transit, about 4Km long and 60m wide runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, quick-turnaround apron design, 36m tall control tower offering sophisticated air navigational services with full Instrument Landing System. Automatic Weather Observation System, Doppler VHF Omni Range capability, twin 2000 square metre import and export warehouses.
In line with latest Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority regulation of 2023, GIA became the first Airport to obtain the latest Operation Permit of its kind in Nigeria in August 2025 consequent upon which scheduled local passenger air transport services commenced between GIA and Nnamdi International Airport in Abuja on 7th of October, 2025
Responding to local business and private travel demand, Gateway Air services will connect Ogun State to the principal destinations of Abuja, Port Harcourt and the east and ultimately extend its reach to the West Africa sub-region.
It is worth noting that both local passenger and international cargo flight demands are geometrically increasing due to the strategic location of GIA within the south-west catchment.
The Airport is set to commence Hajj Operations this year 2026 following the approval of National Hajj Commission and endorsement of NCAA, being among the 17 airports across the country designated for Hajj Operations.
