The All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed its lawmakers to abandon aspirations for automatic re-election tickets and instead engage with stakeholders in their constituencies ahead of the 2026 primaries.

The party's leadership has made it clear that serving Senators and Members of the House of Representatives seeking re-election must participate in competitive primaries, rather than relying on incumbency.

According to reports, the proposal for automatic tickets, championed by some National Assembly leaders, failed to gain traction with the party's national leadership or the Presidency.

Lawmakers have been instructed to consult with governors and party structures in their states if they seek renomination, underscoring the party's commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation.

The APC's stance aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's emphasis on preserving party unity through due process, rather than endorsing preferential treatment for incumbents.
