Vice President Kashim Shettima, in his capacity as Chairman of the National Council on Nutrition, has inaugurated a dedicated Nutrition Financing Subcommittee tasked with creating a sustainable and robust funding framework for nutrition programmes across Nigeria.
The announcement came during a recent virtual meeting of the council, where the Vice President underscored the urgent need for predictable and dedicated financial resources to effectively address malnutrition and support ongoing nutrition interventions nationwide.
The subcommittee has been given a 30-day timeline to develop a comprehensive financing roadmap, which will be presented to both the National Council on Nutrition and the National Economic Council for consideration and approval.
The committee is chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. It includes key ministers responsible for:
Education
Water Resources
Women Affairs
Science and Technology
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will provide secretariat support to the subcommittee.
This initiative is seen as a critical step toward institutionalizing sustainable financing mechanisms that can help scale up nutrition programmes, reduce the high burden of malnutrition in the country, and align with national development priorities.
