The story of Sen. Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi (Okanlomo of Ibadanland) is one deeply rooted in loyalty, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to progressive ideals. His political journey dates back to 1989 when he became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), marking the beginning of decades of active participation in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
In 1991, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives Nigeria, where he began to distinguish himself as a focused and result-oriented public servant. His dedication to party growth and organizational strength was further evident in 1999 when he served as the Financial Secretary of the Election Committee of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Oyo State. In that role, he was instrumental in managing the party’s finances effectively, contributing significantly to its performance during the elections.
Following the loss of the Oyo State gubernatorial election in 2003, many beneficiaries and stakeholders distanced themselves from the party. However, Senator Akanbi stood firm at a critical time when loyalty was tested. Demonstrating uncommon commitment, he personally funded the operations of the AD Oyo State Secretariat, covering office expenses and staff salaries from 2004 to 2010. And also finance most of the party's activities during those years in and out of the State. His actions during this period underscored a rare sense of responsibility and belief in the progressive movement beyond personal gain.
His dedication to preserving legacy and promoting education is equally remarkable. Inspired by the vision of Obafemi Awolowo, fondly regarded as the Father of Progressives, who in 1956 built a four-storey primary school with adjoining classroom blocks within the Methodist Cathedral Church, Agbeni, Senator Akanbi undertook the bold task of restoring the historic institution. At a time when the structure had deteriorated and posed safety risks, with a capacity of over 600 pupils at stake, many hesitated. Yet, he stepped forward to rebuild and modernize the school to meet international standards, ensuring the preservation of a legacy and the safety of future generations.
At the core of his philosophy is a deep understanding that true progressivism transcends political affiliation. For Senator Akanbi, being progressive is a matter of mindset, one defined by genuine concern for the welfare of others. Through the Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi Foundation (RAAF), he has continued to champion initiatives that uplift the less privileged, including large-scale empowerment programmes, free healthcare services, and community development projects.
His belief remains clear: progressivism is not inherited, nor is it confined to party lines it is defined by actions, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to improving lives.
