SAGAMU – In a decisive move to stem the tide of recurring burglaries and fire outbreaks at the popular Awolowo Market, the Sagamu Local Government leadership has announced a sweeping security mandate, requiring all traders to fortify their shops with iron steel doors within 14 days.
The directive followed an on-site assessment of the market by the Council Chairman, accompanied by cabinet members and the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA). The visit allowed officials to witness the extent of recent losses and engage directly with affected traders whose livelihoods have been threatened by insecurity.
A Fortified Front Against Crime
During a follow-up stakeholders' meeting held at the Council Secretariat, it was resolved that the era of porous security is over. The transition from wooden or weak shop entrances to iron steel doors is now a mandatory requirement for all shop owners.
"Security is a collective responsibility," the Chairman emphasized during the session. "Every trader must see themselves as a Chief Security Officer within the market. We are taking these steps not just to protect goods, but to safeguard the peace of mind of every person who earns a living here."
Leadership and Accountability
To ensure these measures are more than just words, a dedicated Security Committee has been constituted. The committee is chaired by the Babaloja of the market, Mr. Adubiagbe Babatunde, who has been tasked with developing and implementing a robust framework to curb criminal activities and restore safety.
Beyond physical security, the Council identified a breakdown in communication as a contributing factor to the market's recent challenges. It was revealed that executive meetings had stalled since the inauguration of the new leadership. In response, the Chairman ordered the immediate resumption of regular executive meetings to foster transparency and prompt decision-making.
A New Era of Unity
The intervention yielded immediate results. In a symbolic show of reconciliation, the market executives held their maiden meeting immediately following the Council engagement. Members were seen embracing one another, signaling an end to internal frictions and reaffirming their commitment to the progress and unity of Awolowo Market.
With the 14-day countdown for shop upgrades now in effect, the Council has signaled its readiness to work closely with the new Security Committee to ensure Awolowo Market remains a safe hub for commerce and community growth.
