ABEOKUTA – In a thrilling display of strategy and traditional prowess, Obafemi Owode Local Government has emerged as the undisputed champion of the Opon Ayo competition at the ongoing 39th Lisabi Festival.
The grand finale, held at the historic Ake Palace in Abeokuta, saw the local government secure the top spot after a grueling series of matches that showcased the best players from across the Egba division.
The Road to Victory
The journey to the podium began on February 5th at the Obafemi Owode Local Government Secretariat. It was there that Ayedun Seun first signaled his dominance, emerging as the semi-finalist for the male category.
Advancing to the final stage at Ake Palace, Seun faced off against formidable opponents representing the five other local governments in the Egba zone:
* Abeokuta North
* Abeokuta South
* Ewekoro
* Ifo
* Odeda
Through tactical brilliance and swift "seed" movements, Seun dislodged his rivals to claim the overall winner’s trophy. His victory was rewarded with a star prize including a trophy, a cash award, and essential commodities such as a bag of rice and vegetable oil.
A Celebration of Egba Heritage
The Opon Ayo tournament remains a cornerstone of the annual Lisabi Festival, serving as more than just a game. This year’s edition reportedly saw a surge in popularity, drawing massive crowds and spectators from across Ogun State and beyond.

Beyond the glory of the trophy, officials emphasized the social impact of the tournament. Mrs. Adeyemo, Director of the Community and Youth Development Department, commended the Executive Chairman for providing the logistics necessary to engage the youth. She noted that such platforms are vital for showcasing talent and serve as a productive alternative that helps reduce crime and social vices within the community.
The 39th Lisabi Festival continues with a series of cultural activities, but for the people of Obafemi Owode, the celebration has already reached a fever pitch with their latest sporting triumph.
