In every democratic system, the question of continuity versus change is one that voters must carefully consider. For the people of Ifo and Ewekoro Local Government Areas, this debate is particularly significant as discussions about the next representative for the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency begin to emerge.
As a resident and indigene of both local government areas, it is reasonable to acknowledge the argument that the next member of the Federal House of Representatives should come from Ifo Local Government Area. After all, Ewekoro LGA has held the seat for several years. In the spirit of fairness and political balance, such a position is understandable.
However, Nigerian politics is not only about rotation; it is also about strategy, influence, and the ability to deliver meaningful development to constituents. In a legislature where seniority, experience, and strategic positioning play major roles in attracting projects and opportunities to constituencies, abrupt changes can sometimes come at a cost.
At the moment, the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency is experiencing a period of increased relevance and visibility in the National Assembly. Among the more than 300 members of the Federal House of Representatives, our constituency currently occupies a prominent leadership position. Our representative serves as the Deputy Chief Whip, placing the constituency among the top leadership ranks in the House.
This level of influence is not easily achieved. It often takes years of relationship-building, political navigation, and legislative experience to attain such a position. Replacing the current representative at a time when the constituency is gaining stronger recognition in the House could mean losing that strategic advantage. A new representative, regardless of competence, would have to begin again—building alliances, establishing influence, and working toward leadership roles from the ground up.
Continuity, on the other hand, offers the possibility of consolidating and expanding the progress already made. Maintaining the current representation could strengthen the constituency’s chances of securing even higher leadership positions in the future, such as Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. Such a development would significantly elevate the constituency’s national profile and could facilitate greater developmental projects for the people.
Political realities within Ogun State also make this discussion even more delicate. With the position of Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly no longer in the hands of Ifo LGA, it becomes even more important to carefully protect the leadership opportunities that remain available to the constituency at the federal level.
Another important factor worth considering is party loyalty. The current representative has demonstrated commitment to his political party, which often plays a crucial role in determining internal support, committee placements, and leadership opportunities within the National Assembly.
That said, there is also room for improvement. One area where the current representative could significantly strengthen his political standing is communication. Many constituents are often unaware of the projects that have been facilitated or the initiatives currently in progress. In an era where perception and visibility matter greatly in public service, it would be wise for the representative to engage a professional media team. Such a team could effectively document and publicize completed projects, ongoing developments, and legislative achievements, ensuring that residents are well informed about the work being done on their behalf.
Effective communication not only builds trust but also strengthens accountability and public confidence.
Ultimately, the decision about the future of the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency lies with the people.
