The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Toyin Amuzu, has congratulated Muslims and Christians on the simultaneous commencement of the 2026 Ramadan fasting period and the Christian Lenten season, both of which begin on February 18.
In a goodwill message released on Tuesday, Amuzu described the rare convergence of the two sacred observances as a significant spiritual moment that calls for sober reflection, unity and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.
According to him, the overlap of Ramadan and Lent offers a unique opportunity for adherents of Islam and Christianity to deepen their faith, promote love for one another and contribute to the moral and social development of the nation.
He urged Muslims to embrace the spiritual essence of Ramadan by upholding values such as self-discipline, charity, patience and compassion for the less privileged. Similarly, he encouraged Christians observing Lent to dedicate the period to prayer, fasting, repentance and acts of kindness that reflect the teachings of the Christian faith.
Amuzu called on the Muslim Ummah to reflect on the virtues of Prophet Muhammad, particularly his teachings on tolerance, generosity and peaceful coexistence. He also urged Christians to emulate the humility, sacrifice and compassion exemplified by Jesus Christ during the 40-day Lenten season.
“The simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reminds us that beyond our different religious practices, we share common values of sacrifice, devotion, discipline and service to humanity,” he said. “This period should inspire us to show love to our neighbours, support the needy and work collectively for peace and progress in our communities.”
The PDP candidate further appealed to Nigerians to use the spiritual seasons to offer prayers for national unity, economic recovery and sustained peace across the country. He noted that sincere prayers and good deeds during the period could help foster harmony and strengthen the bonds that hold the nation together.
He also encouraged religious leaders to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation, stressing that the simultaneous fasting seasons present an opportunity for Muslims and Christians to collaborate in community development initiatives and charitable outreach.
Religious faithful across the country are expected to mark the beginning of Ramadan and Lent with special prayers, fasting and humanitarian activities. Observers say the coincidence of both seasons could further strengthen interfaith understanding and mutual respect.
Amuzu concluded his message by wishing Muslims and Christians a spiritually enriching period of fasting and reflection, expressing optimism that the lessons of sacrifice, tolerance and compassion learned during Ramadan and Lent would translate into lasting peace, unity and development in Nigeria.
