A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Yisa Ismaila Adebayo, popularly known as OMO-ADE, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing the move as a bold step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
In a statement issued on Thursday, OMO-ADE praised the President’s swift assent to the bill, noting that it demonstrated a clear commitment to deepening transparency, credibility and accountability in the nation’s electoral process.
According to him, the amendment of the Electoral Act and the prompt signing of the legislation reflect the administration’s resolve to continually refine Nigeria’s democratic framework in line with global best practices.
“Democracy has always been a work in progress. It continues to evolve, and by consistently reviewing the Electoral Act with a view to strengthening our democratic process, we will keep improving it,” he said.
The APC stalwart emphasized that the reforms introduced in the amended Act would enhance public confidence in elections and address concerns raised in previous electoral cycles. He maintained that regular legislative review of electoral laws is essential to sustaining democratic growth and ensuring that the will of the people remains paramount.
OMO-ADE also argued that the President’s decisive action had rendered unnecessary recent protests by what he described as individuals preparing excuses for potential electoral defeat. He insisted that with improved legal frameworks now in place, political actors should focus on engaging voters rather than casting doubt on the process.
The chieftain further congratulated President Tinubu and members of the National Assembly for their collaborative roles in the passage and signing of the bill. He noted that the President assented to the legislation within 24 hours of its transmission from the legislature, a gesture he said underscores the administration’s sense of urgency regarding electoral reforms.
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 was recently passed by the National Assembly as part of a broader reform agenda aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework.
