The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has distributed electronic tablets to 1,910 public primary and junior secondary schools across the state in a major push to strengthen data management and improve learning outcomes in the basic education sector.
The devices were handed over during a ceremony at the Board’s Conference Room in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme—an initiative supported by the Federal Government and the World Bank and coordinated by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
SUBEB Chairman, Evangelist Ifede Joshua Olalekan, said the intervention aligns with Ogun State’s Digital Platform for Education Revitalization (DiPER) and the administration’s “Building Our Future Together” agenda, describing the distribution as a strategic step toward modernizing education management in the state.
According to him, the tablets will enhance the Basic Education Management Information System (BEMIS), enabling schools to collect, process and transmit accurate data for planning and decision-making. He urged beneficiary schools to safeguard the devices and ensure they are deployed strictly for educational and administrative purposes.
“This initiative is part of our commitment to reposition basic education through digital transformation. The tablets must be used effectively to improve data collection, monitoring and overall school performance,” Olalekan said.
Permanent Member IV of the Board, Hon. Akeem Balogun (popularly known as Baloo Spero), charged headteachers to carry teachers and other staff along in implementing the programme, stressing that the devices should translate into measurable improvements in teaching, learning and school administration.
In his welcome address, Board Secretary Mr. Olubori Akinleye described the distribution as a significant milestone that signals a shift toward a digital era in Ogun’s education sector. He noted that teachers and school administrators would now have more efficient tools for record-keeping, reporting and planning.
Education Secretary for Abeokuta South Local Government Education Authority, Mr. Ali Muhammad, who chaired the event, underscored the importance of proper utilization of the tablets. He called on headteachers to maximize the opportunity to strengthen school management and ensure accurate reporting of data.
Also speaking, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Adewale Olabode, advised beneficiaries to be meticulous in data entry and management to ensure the success of the BEMIS platform.
Responding on behalf of headteachers, Mrs. Oluwakemi Sodeke, Chairman of the Abeokuta South Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), expressed appreciation to the state government, UBEC and development partners for the intervention. She pledged that the devices would be judiciously used to improve school administration and learning outcomes.
The tablet distribution is expected to boost real-time data collection, improve monitoring of school activities and support evidence-based planning across Ogun State’s public basic education system. Officials say the move will ultimately enhance teaching quality, resource allocation and student performance as the state continues its drive toward a more technology-driven education sector.
