Tension has gripped parts of Ogun Central Senatorial District following a violent incident that left one person dead and another declared wanted, after local youths launched a crackdown against alleged homosexuality and cult-related activities.
Residents of communities within Obafemi-Owode and Odeda Local Government Areas have been reeling since a March 2, 2024 incident along Ajebo Road, where a group of youths reportedly mobilized in response to allegations of homosexuality involving two individuals.
According to community sources, the youths had accused Okeleye Omobolaji and an associate linked to Marthyrock Global Concept Ltd of engaging in acts they described as contrary to local laws and cultural values. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the death of Okeleye during the unrest. Details surrounding the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear at press time.
The Chief Executive Officer of Marthyrock Global Concept Ltd, identified by residents as Nurudeen Ayo M , reportedly escaped from the scene. Some youth leaders have since declared him “wanted,” insisting he should face justice in Ogun State.
In the aftermath, youth groups from the Egba axis converged on Abeokuta, staging rallies and publicly denouncing homosexuality and cultism. They argued that both practices are inconsistent with their understanding of community values and Nigerian law.
However, community leaders and civil society observers have expressed concern over the resort to mob action, warning that vigilante justice undermines the rule of law and could fuel further violence.
Community leader, Alfah Chaik Abdul Rasak Abdul, and The youths have called on the Ogun State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Ogun State Command, to intensify public enlightenment campaigns and law enforcement efforts aimed at addressing cultism and other social vices among young people.
Security experts emphasize that while communities have the right to advocate for moral and social standards, allegations of criminal conduct must be handled strictly through lawful channels. They urged residents to allow security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that justice, where necessary, is pursued within the framework of the law.
As investigations continue, authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing arrests or charges related to the March 2 incident. Meanwhile, calls for calm have intensified, with stakeholders urging youths to avoid further violence and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and stability across Ogun Central.
