The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦40 million as consolatory assistance to the families and dependants of 20 deceased officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a solemn ceremony underscoring the state’s resolve to honour sacrifice and uphold humane governance.
The presentation, which held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at the LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, was coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa. Each beneficiary family received ₦2 million in recognition of the gallantry and ultimate sacrifice of their loved ones, described as “heroes and heroines” who lost their lives in the line of duty.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the gesture was aimed at demonstrating the Lagos State Government’s enduring solidarity with the families and dependants of fallen officers.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Giwa stressed that the financial support should not be misconstrued as compensation for loss, noting that no amount of money can equate to the value or sanctity of human life. He explained that the assistance represents a symbolic and tangible acknowledgment of the courage, dedication, selflessness and exceptional devotion to duty exhibited by the deceased officers in service to Lagos State and humanity.
“The Lagos State Government remains resolute in its determination to perpetuate the memory of these valiant men and women. This intervention is a clear testament that their sacrifices were neither unnoticed nor unappreciated, and that their families will not be left to bear the burden of loss alone,” Giwa said.
He reaffirmed the people-centred philosophy of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and its unwavering commitment to the welfare of public servants and their dependants.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, commended the state government for embedding empathy and humane consideration as core principles of governance. He noted that the initiative would further strengthen public confidence in government institutions and serve as moral encouragement to serving officers, assuring them that dedication and sacrifice would always attract honour and compassionate remembrance.
In his welcome address, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, paid glowing tribute to the fallen officers, describing them as indomitable patriots whose legacy of discipline, selflessness and service would remain permanently etched in the history of the Authority.
He expressed profound appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his humane leadership and for sustaining a governance culture that prioritises human dignity, institutional loyalty and social responsibility.
Adding an emotional touch to the occasion, the wife of the pioneer General Manager of LASTMA, Late Engr. Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, encouraged the bereaved families to judiciously utilise the funds for the education, welfare and holistic development of their children, whom she described as the enduring legacies of the fallen officers.
In a heartfelt vote of thanks, the wife of Late Adeyemo Rotimi expressed deep gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu on behalf of all beneficiary families. She praised the Governor’s empathy and steadfast commitment to ensuring that the memories and sacrifices of their loved ones continue to receive honour and reverence within the Lagos State public service.
The ceremony ended on a note of sober reflection and renewed institutional commitment, reinforcing the Lagos State Government’s pledge to safeguard the welfare of its workforce and to eternally honour officers who paid the supreme price in the course of public service.
