ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA – In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare access for the informal transportation sector, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South Local Governments came together on Tuesday to host a crucial stakeholders’ meeting focused on the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme. The event took place at the Abeokuta South Local Government Secretariat and drew participation from an array of influential stakeholders.
The meeting served as a platform for dialogue among key figures, including the Chairmen and executive members of both local governments, the leadership of prominent transport unions such as the Riders Association of Nigeria (ROMO), the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), and the Amalgamated Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN). Additionally, representatives from the Divisional Police Forces of both local governments, as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Party Chairmen for Abeokuta North and South, and members of the Arewa community, were present.
During the meeting, discussions centered around the importance of inclusive governance and the necessity of providing accessible healthcare solutions to informal sector workers, particularly okada riders who play an essential role in the transportation landscape of Ogun State. Stakeholders emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to ensure the successful implementation of the health insurance scheme.
Union leaders voiced their strong support for the program, pledging to actively participate in outreach and education initiatives to help their members understand and benefit from the health insurance options available to them. In his remarks, the Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Balogun Afeez Olaniyi emphasized the vital role of the transportation sector in the local economy and the necessity of safeguarding the health of those who operate within it.
