Prof. Joash Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), vowed during his Senate screening on Thursday to ensure no Nigerian voter is disenfranchised, promising to leverage drones and advanced technology to deliver election materials to remote and insecure areas.
The Professor of Law and former university administrator outlined a bold vision to modernize INEC’s operations and boost electoral credibility.
“No voter will be left behind,” Amupitan declared, emphasizing solutions to logistical and security challenges that often disrupt elections.
“We will invest in logistics and technology — and where necessary, deploy drones with adequate safeguards — to ensure election materials and personnel reach every part of Nigeria safely and on time.”
Amupitan stressed collaboration with the Joint Committee on Election Security to tackle threats in conflict-prone regions. Beyond technology, he prioritized voter education, announcing plans for a nationwide campaign to enhance citizens’ understanding of democratic processes.
“INEC will embark on aggressive civic and voter education across the country,” he said, citing Section 2 of the Electoral Act, which mandates INEC to educate stakeholders, including political parties and civil society, to reduce irregularities and build trust.
“When people understand the process, they are less likely to be manipulated or discouraged,” he added, aiming to foster an informed electorate.
Amupitan also committed to transparency, pledging strict adherence to financial and procurement laws.
“Every kobo released to the Commission will be used for its appropriated purpose,” he assured.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised Amupitan’s vision, urging him to address senators’ queries in detail.
The nomination comes amid calls for electoral reforms, with Amupitan’s tech-driven, inclusive approach signaling a push to restore public confidence in INEC ahead of future elections.
