Tragedy struck at Esure Ijebu-Imushin on Tuesday, September 2, when a man identified as Festus Okoye was lynched by an angry mob after being allegedly caught in a homosexual act.
According to eyewitnesses, Okoye was attacked by residents of the area after being discovered in a compromising situation. His partner, not yet identified, reportedly escaped from the scene and is currently on the run.
The incident has sparked tension within the community, with many residents expressing shock and anger.
Police spokesperson, Mr. Adegun , confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. “The matter is under investigation. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue while efforts are being made to track down those involved in the jungle justice as well as the escaped suspect,” he said.
Unconfirmed sources allege that Okoye was a “known homosexual” who had previously been reported to community elders and the police. It was further gathered that in March 2024, Okoye and one Sefiu Oluwatoyin Olaoluwa were caught in a similar incident, beaten by a mob, and later handed over to law enforcement. While Okoye was released on bail, his partner *Sefiu* reportedly absconded and is believed to have fled the country.
The police have since declared Sefiu Oluwatoyin Olaoluwa wanted in connection with both the previous and the latest incident.
Meanwhile, authorities have condemned the mob action, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
