A same-sex couple narrowly escaped a violent mob attack after being discovered in a compromising situation at No. 12 Oke Aje Street, Ijebu Ode, on Friday, August 1st, 2025.
The victims, identified as Adewale Moses Adegeye and his partner, Benjamin Okoli, were allegedly caught in an intimate act by residents of the area. Eyewitnesses say that tensions quickly escalated as locals confronted the pair, prompting a physical assault and an attempted mob action.
Fortunately, both men managed to flee the scene unharmed, though the incident has sparked heated discussions and raised concerns about safety in the region.
A police spokesperson, DSP Aguiyi, confirmed the incident, stating, “We are aware of the situation at Oke Aje Street. Investigations are ongoing, and we urge members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their hands.”
An anonymous resident, claimed that Adegeye was a “known gay” in the community and had previously been reported to both the police and traditional elders. “He’s a bad example to our children and will be dealt with if seen again,” the source warned.
Another community source alleged that Adegeye had previously been ostracised from a community in Imo State over similar issues related to his sexual orientation.
An activist from a local rights group, who requested anonymity due to safety concerns, stated, “Nobody deserves to be attacked or threatened for who they love. This is a gross violation of their rights under the constitution.”
Same-sex relationships remain a criminal offense under Nigerian law, with the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 prescribing up to 14 years in prison. However, rights organisations argue that such laws often fuel community violence and discrimination.
