Ewekoro, Ogun State – June 12, 2025 – The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ewekoro Local Government Branch, has launched a fervent appeal to Ogun State Governor, Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun, for the urgent reconstruction of the Itori General Hospital, a once-thriving healthcare institution that has sadly fallen into disrepair. In a letter dated June 12, the council expressed grave concerns over the state of the hospital, which has become emblematic of the broader healthcare challenges facing the community.
The Itori General Hospital, which formerly served as a crucial lifeline for residents, has suffered years of neglect, culminating in the facility's functional collapse. With the hospital no longer operating, locals are left with few options, often compelled to seek medical assistance in far-off locations. This not only imposes significant financial burdens but also prolongs the wait for critical care, with potentially dire consequences for patient health outcomes.
In the letter to the Governor, the NYCN acknowledged the efforts of the state government in revitalizing primary healthcare centers across the local government area. However, they emphasized that these facilities are ill-equipped to manage complex medical cases that require the services of a general hospital. “The absence of a functional general hospital compels many residents to seek medical care elsewhere, often at great cost and inconvenience,” the letter stated.
The appeal comes at a particularly urgent time as residents face an escalating healthcare crisis exacerbated by the lack of adequate facilities. Tragic stories of preventable deaths and prolonged suffering have begun to surface, igniting a call to action among community leaders and youth.
The NYCN also highlighted the potential benefits of restoring the Itori General Hospital, citing not only the provision of quality healthcare but also the positive impact on the local economy and overall community well-being. “Restoring this facility will not only ensure access to quality healthcare for our people but also strengthen the local economy,” they remarked.
In a show of support for their cause, the NYCN underscored their belief in the Governor’s visionary leadership and commitment to public welfare. The group chose to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to public protests, reflecting a desire to collaborate with the administration for the benefit of the community. “We sincerely hope that we will not be compelled to escalate this plea further,” they warned, underscoring the urgency of their request.
The youth council’s letter has been widely shared across various community platforms, garnering support from local leaders, health professionals, and residents alike. Many have voiced their hopes for a quick and responsive action from the state government.
As the appeal is directed to Governor Abiodun, it also copies several notable figures, including the Commissioner for Health and local representatives, signaling broad support for the initiative. The community is eagerly anticipating a prompt and positive response to what they consider a critical issue affecting their health and future.
