In a heartfelt tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid homage to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, recognizing his significant contributions to the nation's history and his pivotal role in the President's 2023 electoral success. The solemn occasion took place during the 8th Day Fidau Prayer held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, drawing an esteemed gathering that included state governors, former leaders, lawmakers, and traditional rulers.
During his tribute, President Tinubu highlighted the late monarch's unwavering support during the critical period surrounding the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was won by Chief MKO Abiola. "The Awujale was always there for us," the President stated, emphasizing Oba Adetona's honesty and fortitude. "He was steadfast and resolute. He would not deceive you."
The President further lauded the late Awujale as a beacon of pride for the Yoruba people, crediting him with bringing dignity to the Yoruba race and asserting that Yoruba history is incomplete without acknowledging Oba Adetona’s contributions.
President Tinubu also expressed gratitude for the late monarch's long life, which extended to 91 years. He commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his care and respect toward the late Oba and urged the community to unite and honor the rich legacies left behind.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun described the Awujale as a moral compass whose reign spurred unprecedented development in Ijebuland. He underscored Oba Adetona's commitment to upholding the culture and dignity of his people, positioning him as a voice for the less privileged and a mentor to many.
