SAGAMU—In a heartfelt ceremony that transcended mere celebration, Sagamu Local Government yesterday commissioned a state-of-the-art Information Technology Centre to honor the legacy of the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, affectionately known as Ijaya. The event served as not only a remembrance of her remarkable contributions to the community but also as a rallying call for continued growth and empowerment in Remo Land.
Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Olasile Odulate, delivered a moving speech highlighting the profound impact Ijaya had on her constituents during her time in office. "Today is not just another day. It's a day that reminds us of what true leadership, vision, and selflessness can birth," he stated, setting the tone for a day filled with admiration and gratitude.
The event commenced with the commissioning of not only the IT Centre but also the Sagamu Local Government Legislative Building and the reconstruction of Sode Street in Sabo. These projects are emblematic of Ijaya's commitment to community development, showcasing a legacy of continuity, growth, and impactful public service.
Odulate reflected on the transformative era when Ijaya served, noting, "During Ijaya's reign, Remo witnessed a transformation we will talk about for generations. She brought not just projects, but purpose." He praised her ability to redefine representation, emphasizing her dedication to empowering communities and giving a voice to the voiceless.
The Chairman's speech took a personal turn as he acknowledged the support of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who played a crucial role in Ijaya’s success. "Your Excellency, you saw a star in Ijaya. You gave her wings to fly," he expressed, lauding the Governor for empowering not just a woman, but an impactful leader who, through her work, touched the lives of many within the region.
As the ceremony progressed, the mood shifted from reflection to determination, prompting Odulate to address the urgent need for leadership that aligns with Ijaya's vision. "When a light this strong goes dim, another must rise," he said, urging community members to seek out new leaders who embody the same clarity of purpose as Ijaya.
In a poignant reminder that Ijaya's dreams and aspirations still hold relevance, Odulate declared, "This Centre is one of many reminders that Ijaya may have physically left us, but her dreams haven’t and her blueprint remains. She left behind a map, and we must not let that map gather dust."
The IT Centre is expected to serve as a vital resource for the youth of Sagamu, bridging digital gaps and facilitating technological education and innovation. As the unveiling of the Centre drew near, participants were filled with a sense of purpose and responsibility—to keep Ijaya's legacy alive through action, rather than mere words.
"We are here today, not in mourning, but in gratitude," Odulate concluded. "We immortalize her because her legacy lives in our roads, our schools, our women, our children, and now, in this IT Centre that will open the digital world to many."
With the commissioning of this IT Centre, Sagamu Local Government stands poised not only to remember Rt. Hon. Dr. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga but also to actively continue her mission of empowerment and development for generations to come.
