The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat, Ogun State vacant, following the death of the former Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga.
Onanuga died early this year, on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Making the announcement during plenary on Wednesday, June 25, Abbas stated that the decision was in accordance with Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the legislature to declare a seat vacant under such circumstances.
With this declaration, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now expected to announce a date for bye-elections into all vacant seats in both the state and National Assemblies.
Currently, five seats are vacant in the House of Representatives. Four of these are due to the death of members, while the fifth; the Oredo Federal Constituency seat in Edo State — became vacant following the elevation of Dennis Idahosa to the position of Deputy Governor of the state.
