Kebbi killings: Government not doing enough – Malami

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has expressed deep concern over the increasing insecurity in the Argungu and Zuru Emirates of Kebbi State, urging the different tiers of government – federal, state, and local – to take coordinated, immediate action.

 

In a video message from Birnin Kebbi, Malami condemned the state of affairs, saying government inaction in the face of alarming levels of violence continues to lead to more deaths and displacement of communities.

 

“I wonder how the federal government is not doing enough to protect the lives and properties of citizens, let alone the state and local governments,” he said.

 

Malami specifically highlighted recent deadly attacks in Zuru, where he claimed more than 200 lives had been lost. He described the emergence of “strange systems of insecurity” across Kebbi as both disturbing and alarming.

 

He warned against politicising security matters, stressing that protecting lives and property must take precedence over political interests.

 

“Security issues should not be politicised,” he said.

 

“Lives are being lost, the rights of the people are being violated, and their wealth is being destroyed.”

 

He also pointed to the plight of residents in Argungu and Zuru Emirates, noting that Lakurawa elements continue to hold communities in Argungu to ransom, while bandits destabilise villages like Kyebu and Tadurga in Zuru.

While extending condolences to the affected communities, Malami reiterated the need for proactive measures to curb insecurity before it spirals further out of control.
