Israeli firefighting teams continued efforts on Thursday to contain wildfires near Jerusalem, as authorities reopened major roads that had been closed due to the rapidly spreading flames.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that 18 individuals have been detained on suspicion of arson, according to local media outlet Arutz Sheva.
Israel’s fire service reported that more than 150 firefighting teams and 12 aircraft remain deployed to combat the fires, which ignited Wednesday along the main Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway.
The blaze prompted mass evacuations and widespread road closures.
Emergency medical services agency Magen David Adom said 23 people were treated for injuries, primarily due to smoke inhalation and burns, while public broadcaster Kan reported 17 firefighters sustained injuries during operations.
Crews worked overnight to bring the fires under control, enabling police to reopen all major routes, including the heavily trafficked Jerusalem–Tel Aviv corridor.
“All routes have been reopened to traffic,” police announced in a statement on Thursday.
