The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed recent reports suggesting that Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates must write their exams in the same state where they registered.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fabian Benjamin, the board’s Public Communication Advisor, described the claim as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard the erroneous report.
Benjamin clarified that candidates are at liberty to register for the UTME in any part of the country and choose their preferred examination town regardless of their state of registration.
“In a recent interview with a NAN reporter, I clarified that candidates are not restricted to taking the examination within their state of registration. They have the flexibility to register anywhere in the country and select any town nationwide from any registration point,” he explained.
He further noted that Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres are grouped by towns to ease access for candidates. Once a candidate selects a specific town for the examination, they are expected to sit for the test at a CBT centre within that town—not outside of it.
“For example, if a candidate selects Garki as their examination town, they must take the exam in that town. They cannot be reassigned to another location, contrary to some claims,” Benjamin added.
Emphasizing the flexibility of JAMB’s examination system, he reiterated that a candidate registering in Lagos can choose to sit for the examination in Sokoto or any other town in the country.
“This flexibility is designed to accommodate candidates’ preferences and ensure convenience,” he said. “We urge the public to disregard the inaccurate report and rely on official JAMB communication for accurate information.”
