Tragedy: Students Die In Oyo Road Crash On Their Way To JAMB Exam

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Saturday morning as several students lost their lives in a ghastly accident on the Oyo-Ogbomoso road in Oyo State while on their way to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

A harrowing video clip shared online captured the aftermath of the crash, showing a scene of devastation that has plunged families and the entire community into mourning.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident involved a commercial vehicle transporting the students to a JAMB centre in Ogbomoso. The vehicle reportedly suffered a catastrophic brake failure, leading to the fatal crash.

“Fatal accident claimed the lives of students who were going to write JAMB in Ogbomoso on Oyo road, Oyo State,” read the somber caption attached to the video.

At the time of reporting, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, had yet to respond to calls and messages seeking official confirmation of the incident.

Meanwhile, in other JAMB-related developments, the examination body announced it had arrested 27 impersonators attempting to cheat in the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). These individuals have been handed over to the Nigerian police for immediate prosecution.

In a bid to uphold the integrity of the examination, JAMB also disclosed that it had delisted four Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres that failed to meet the board’s rigorous technical and ethical standards.

“While JAMB commends the 883 centres that have demonstrated exceptional performance, any centre falling short of the required standards will be blacklisted, regardless of ownership,” said Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson.

Candidates previously assigned to the delisted centres have been urged to urgently reprint their examination notification slips for their new schedules.

As of Friday, April 25, 2025, over 900,000 candidates out of 2,083,600 registered have successfully completed their UTME exams.

The tragedy on Oyo-Ogbomoso road serves as a painful reminder of the fragile journey many students endure in their pursuit of higher education — a journey that, heartbreakingly, some will never complete.
