Tragedy struck once more on Thursday night as a fire outbreak devastated Araromi Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The market, located inside Agodi and adjacent to the Correctional Service facility, is a hub for auto spare parts and vehicle dismantling operations.
It has again fallen victim to a fire incident, the latest in a series of similar disasters that have plagued the market in recent years.
According to eyewitness reports, the fire began at approximately 10:55 p.m. from Block A, at No. 64 Mayegun Cement store. A sudden power surge was cited as the likely cause.
Speaking on the incident, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed that the agency received a distress call at 11:02 p.m. on April 10, 2025.
“Our control room received a distress call at exactly 23:02hrs,” Akinyinka said. “Our team, led by CFS Jimoh, responded promptly and arrived at the scene to find several lock-up shops already engulfed in flames. We immediately took action to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.”
Despite the quick response, at least 12 shops were completely razed.
The fire service, however, managed to save several other properties, preserving assets estimated in billions of naira. The firefighting operation concluded by 3:18 a.m.
These recurring incidents have prompted traders and residents to call for urgent and improved safety measures, including better electrical infrastructure, fire surveillance systems, and prompt emergency response capabilities.
As the smoke clears, affected business owners are left to pick up the pieces, once again counting their losses and questioning when the cycle of destruction will end.
