Shehu Sani Rejects Obasanjo’s Claim, Defends Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

Former Kaduna Central lawmaker Shehu Sani has pushed back against claims that the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project is a wasteful endeavor.

His statement comes in response to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism, in which he labeled the project as corrupt and unnecessary.

Obasanjo also condemned the Bola Tinubu administration for allocating N21 billion to build a new official residence for Vice President Kashim Shettima.

These remarks were made in his newly released book, Nigeria: Past and Future, launched last week to mark his 88th birthday.

Obasanjo argued that national resources are being misappropriated while crucial sectors remain underfunded. He pointed to the coastal highway and the Vice President’s new residence as prime examples of financial mismanagement and misplaced priorities.

However, in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, Sani dismissed the notion that the highway project is wasteful.

He suggested that the real concern should be corruption, noting that such a large sum of money could have easily been embezzled.

“I don’t think the Lagos-Calabar highway is wasteful, taking cognizance of the fact that such an amount of money for the project can be stolen by one man, as it happened in the CBN in the past,” Sani wrote.

His remarks highlight ongoing debates over government spending, corruption, and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
