The students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, have shut down the institution to protest the 100% increase in their tuition by the school management.
The school management had last week released a new fee schedule for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The release by the management before school resumption showed that the tuition fees for freshers were raised from N108,000 to N240,000, while the fees for old students were raised from N29,000 to N131,000.
Following the increments, the students on Monday shut down the campus in a peaceful protest.
The protest also caused traffic jams on the Akure-Ilesha road, with some motorists forced to make a U-turn.
FUTA’s spokesperson, Adegbenro Adebanjo, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.
