Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Anthony Martial is expected to miss the remainder of Manchester United’s season with a knee injury.

Martial was forced off with a knee problem during France’s 2-0 victory over Kazakhstan last Sunday.

The 25-year-old was briefly able to continue before he was substituted, while he played no part in France’s 1-0 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday.

However, France played down the severity of Martial’s injury with Didier Deschamps claiming that the forward’s knee issue was not serious.

But speaking before kick-off ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Brighton at Old Trafford, Solskjaer suggested that Martial, who remained with France’s squad despite his injury, may not return before the season ends.

‘Unfortunately, he sprained his knee with France,’ Solskjaer told MUTV.

‘It’s always when they go away on internationals… you can keep your fingers crossed and hope they come back fit.

‘Paul has played in all three games, 30, 60, 90 minutes, so that was a boost for us.

‘Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing, especially when reports from there [France] was that it wasn’t anything serious but it looks a bad one.’
