Tragic: 3 Cross-River State University Drown In Ogoja River

Three undergraduate students of the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH including a Ghanaian have drowned while on picnic in Ogoja River in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria. 

The 3 students were said to have drowned at the weekend in one of the popular community rivers in Abakpa, Ogoja Local Government Area of the State. 

The students including the Ghanian until their death, were in Ogoja campus of the state owned university with one of them in the Department of Civil Engineering in Calabar campus of the same institution. 

Eyewitness accounts say the news of their death filtered into the town on Sunday with confirmation of their deaths.

According to a source, Sunday Odey, the students went to the river to cool off their heads due to the harsh weather condition. Moreso that it has been a tradition that during the dry season, villagers normally troop to the river to swim.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said the State Command is still waiting for the details of how the incident occurred from the Divisional Police Officer before an official statement could be released.

The latest incident brings to 9 the numbers of students of the institution who lost their lives in various circumstances including cultism in the last three months.
