A three-storey building along Bamigbose Street of Lagos Island was on Saturday, December 14, demolished by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the director general of LASEMA, the demolished structure was a distressed building with obvious cracks all over the wall, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The LASEMA boss also revealed that another building on the same street was brought down on Wednesday, December 11.
Osanyintolu said that before the agency carried out the demolition, residents in the affected building were notified to vacate the structure and that even the landlords removed the roofing to ensure that they leave on time.
Oke-Osanyintolu, the director general of LASEMA, the demolished structure was a distressed building with obvious cracks all over the wall.
He added: ”The ministry’s recommendations are necessary to carry out stress tests to ascertain the integrity of the building. After thorough investigations, the ministry agreed that the houses should be taken to ground zero.
”Consequently, the residents of the building were advised to vacate the premises within five days for their safety.”
LASEMA had said that the inferno was caused by the contact between a tanker conveying stolen petroleum product from a vandalized pipeline came in with an electric pole.
Moreover, the police command in the state was yet to release an official statement on the tragic development.
LASEMA said that the incident took place at the back of Honeyland School, Abesan Estate, Ipaja, adding that no causalities were recorded as residents in the area helped the state's fire service to put out the flames.
