As if to dare Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, dare-devil armed robbers stormed the commercial city of Onitsha barely 24 hours after he donated vehicles and CCTV to the state Police Command in an elaborate ceremony in Awka to flag off the fourth phase of his pet security project, Operation Kpochapu.
The rampaging robbers killed five persons in two separate operations along Enugu/Onitsha expressway, leaving scores injured.
Information gathered by News Express has it that the night marauders drove into Seaman petrol station with their vehicle at about 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, and were granted access with the belief that they were customers.
However, the robbers numbering about six on arrival shot and killed one of the vigilante operatives on sight and a staff member who was woken up by the sound of a barrage of gunshots and made to run.
They also shot to death a female sales attendant, who delayed when the masked pointer asked her for the key to the vault.
In all, the casualties included two girls and three men at Seaman Petrol Station within Borromew round-about axis and a popular pharmacy shop along Awka road.
It was learnt that all money realised from sales for the day were carted away as the pointer showed where the proceeds were kept. Scores of night travelers who were plying the area stopped their vehicles and scampered for safety.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said police is investigating the matter and will come out with its findings later.
