A one-year-old child is fighting for life after nearly drowning in a back garden hot tub and having to be airlifted to hospital unconscious.

The baby girl fell into the back garden jacuzzi at her family home in Bogor Regis during this weekend's heatwave.

The little girl was discovered by his family, submerged in the pool, moments after they realised she was missing.

After frantically searched both upstairs and downstairs in the home in West Sussex, upon going outside one family member found her in the hot tub.

An air ambulance, paramedics and police rushed to the girl's home and, after emergency treatment to revive the tot, she was flown by helicopter to Southampton General Hospital where doctors had been put on emergency standby.

She was understood to be in critical condition upon being airlifted.

Police are believed to have interviewed the family about the circumstances of the incident and to have ruled that it was a tragic accident.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: 'Shortly before 4.30pm on Saturday police attended an address in Bognor Regis where a one-year-old girl was reported to have fallen into water in a garden hot tub.

'Ambulance personnel and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance also attended.

'The child was resuscitated and flown to Southampton General Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.

'The incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time.'
