In line with its determination towards developing all Agricultural sectors in the state, Ogun State Government has disclosed its readiness to create pigs market and abattoir in the State.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Abosede Ogunleye made the disclosure while speaking with journalists at a programme tagged‘’ Africa Swine Fever Resist" organised for stakeholders in pig business by National Veterinary Service Kaduna in collaboration with the State Ministry of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
Mrs. Abosede said it has become imperatives to create the facilities considering the increase in the demand for pork meat, saying that the market would help the farmers to display their products as well as creating access for buyers.
She commended the farmers for their cooperation with the researchers from National Veterinary Service, as this would prevent the spread of the disease and find lasting solution.
In his remarks, the leader, National Veterinary Service Research Team, Dr Adeyinka Adedeji, described Africa Swine fever as a contagious disease which causes high rate of mortality, noting that it could plunge farmers to serious debt and send them out of business.
He said the disease had caught the attention of some developed countries as part of efforts to proffer lasting solution to its spread, citing the examples of continents such as Europe and Asia that happened to be the largest producers and consumers of pork meat.
Doctor Adedeji however advised farmers to always keep their farms clean and contact the Ministry of Agriculture if they notice any strange behaviour in their pigs.
Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, Mr, Azeez adebanjo expressed appreciation to the state government for boosting pig business in the state.
