HELEN PAUL: When Life Shows You Pepper, Make Peppersoup!

Life is hard. So the ability of a person to turn a bad situation around and still shine through with grace is worthy of note.

A rare gem we celebrate today is Helen Paul, born out of rape but guess who has a PhD. Whoop whoop!

She is a comedienne and media personality known as Tatafo. She broke out as a naughty comic character on a radio programme known as “Wetin Dey” on Radio Continental 102.3FM, Lagos, and popularly known on the programme as “Tatafo” – a witty kid.

Recently, Helen Paul bagged a PhD from the University of Lagos and is currently the first Stand-up comedian to have a PhD. In a heartfelt post to celebrate and praise her mother for the academic feat, she revealed she was “born out of rape”.

She wrote, “I HELEN PAUL dedicate this to my mum, you gave birth to me out of rape, they told you I wouldn’t amount to anything.

“I grew up hearing from family members; being called a “Bastard” and each time I asked you, you said `Olorun lon wo omo were, Olorun ma wo e’.

“Meaning God watches over the child of a mad person, he’d watch over you...

AND HE DID!

Helen Paul started small, she penetrated the entertainment industry when she started working at Eko Reelmix Studios and Radio Lagos/Eko FM as a front desk manager whilst doubling as a back-up and voiceover artiste.

As a comedian, her first professional performance happened whilst she was a student at the University of Lagos. She attended an event with a group of friends but the stand-up comic billed to perform failed to show up.

In 2014, she opened a film and theater academy, named "Helen Paul Theater and Film Academy". It consists of a dance studio, a makeup studio, a recording studio, a rehearsal studio, a photo studio, a mainly digital library, an editing studio, and a hostel for students who enrol for courses in the Academy.

A recipient of several awards, Helen Paul presently hosts ‘Jara’ on Africa Magic.

She is married and their union is blessed with three children

She turned it around, didnt she? And you can too.

"Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."
