Former deputy governor of Ogun State, Sen. Alh. Adegbenga Shefiu Kaka has announced his intention to contest the state governorship election next year, under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
The former National Assembly member during the sixth Senate is presently addressing newsmen at the Iwe Irohin House of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Secretariat, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
This will be the second time the Ijebu-Igbo born politician will be taking a shot at the number one seat, at Okemosan. He had earlier contested under the platform of the Democratic People's Alliance (DPS) in 2007.
Kaka was born on 14 April 1952, to a pious Muslim family, and entered Ijebu Muslim College in 1968. He was the deputy Governor from 1999 to 2003, during the governorship of Chief Olusegun Osoba.
In the 9 April 2011 election, Kaka was elected Senator of Ogun East with 76,543 votes, ahead of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Toheeb Odunowo with 52,613 votes and the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) candidate, Prince Abiodun Odusanya, with 46,148 votes.
The latest in the addition to those aspiring to replace Sen.Ibikunle Amosun in the ruling party from Ogun East has risen to three, as Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru and Otunba Jimi Lawal are also serious contenders for the race.
Also, observers noted that his interest in the race from Ogun East senatorial district will again throw spanners into the works of the Amosun led APC to produce a replacement from Ogun West senatorial district, which he had been boasting would be made possible in 2019.
